We were deployed in Cambodia, Sa Ang District, Kandal Province, at the behest of The Australia Cambodia Foundation, in partnership with AusAID and World Vision Australia, to urgently clear the site of the proposed SUNSHINE ORPHANAGE of mines and UXO to a depth of eight metres using both mine detectors and magnetometers.
We had just four weeks to clear approximately 49,000 square metres of hard baked scrub, waterways and farmland.
A team of five Gurkha Engineers led by our Head of Operations Carl Chirgwin set about this mammoth task.
We had a total of 40 "UXO finds" ranging from 60mm mortar bombs, through 105mm artillery rounds to propelled grenades and including 1 US M18A1 antipersonnel mine. The project team was greatly assisted by the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), who took the UXO away for disposal at a more suitable site, as the orphanage is located close to a main road and a village.
The team has to be congratulated for their hard work, dedication and professionalism. After meeting the children, being family men themselves, I'm sure they would have worked without pay!

VIETNAM - Vung Tau - Ba ria Province.
Management: UXO clearance of 40 kilometers of the Nam Con Son Gas and Oil Pipeline route, utilising a local military company to provide a composite team and equipments. By the end of the clearance however, safety dictated that the cleared areas be increased by about 50%. In addition to managing clearance and safety, the company provided:
The SGS UK led teams cleared beaches and dunes, rice fields, mangrove swamps, rivers, farmland, and villages. Almost 200 explosive items were safely detected and cleared, ranging from booby trap grenades and jumping antipersonnel mines to heavy artillery shells. There were no landmine or UXO related accidents or incidents.
